During the Communist-run governments of the Provisional Military Administrative Council (also known as the Derg, 1974–1977) and the dictatorial Mengistu (1977–1991), the Ethiopian navy grew under the influence of the Soviet Union.
Training: Officer training – The 1984 class comprised 48 ensigns; typical of the size of classes in subsequent years. After the rise of the Communist government in Ethiopia, select members of the navy attended the Soviet Union’s naval academy in Leningrad.
Enlisted training – Seamen, technicians, and marines enlisted men were trained at Mitsiwa; their term of service was for seven years.
Forces: By early 1991, the Ethiopian navy was a 3,500-strong force, with the following vessels:
• two frigates
• eight missile craft
• six torpedo craft
• six patrol boats
• two amphibious craft
• two support/training craft
Final disposition: The Ethiopian navy was finally dissolved after the independence of Eritrea in 1991. At that time, many ships were sold for scrap in Djibouti, such as the four Peyta-class gas turbine-powered frigates Ethiopia had acquired from the Soviet Union.
The navy also had four Osa-class missile boats, one of which is still in use by Eritrea. Though Eritrea wished to purchase up to 16 of the former Ethiopian ships, plans were dropped in September 1996 to avoid exacerbating an international confrontation with Yemen.

The ex-Ethiopian navy was also equiped with two Russian made shore Missile Lounching complex,each can cary P21/22 winged missiles.The system was managed by about 10 officers, 40 marines and seamen,who were trained for about 14 months in then USSR , with diffrent diciplines.

While this all sounds great and precious to the one time Ethiopian Navy, that never engaged or used its the navy. I say why all this money for a 100 officers when the nation was starving after the drought. I am Ethiopian living in Bulgaria for 30 years and still love Ethiopia. It just hurts me so bad because i can’t get the image of the Ethiopian child displayed on the news since 1984, around the world every time news about Ethiopian shortage of food. The child with a cracker/biscuit in his hand and taking small bites of it not because he was nibbling on it but it was because that is all he can chew due to loss of energy and appetite from starvation. Shame on the Ethiopian government to let this happen at that time.

Dear the former Ethiopian Navy members, I have read the Book named- “ETHIOPIANA YEBAHR TEREFWA”. The Book had written & published, in the real Ethiopian History especialy ” Red Sea belongs to Ethiopia”. That has been teaching for confused people in obivious evidences.
I have strong condemned, about the former Ethiopian Navy Military Adminstrations, which is written in this Book as good Achivements-”WETADERAWI DEHNNET” and POLETIKA MEMRIYA”( Please read a new published Book, written by Major Mamo Lema- “YEWEGEN TOR TIZTAYE”. this Book explained, How WETADERWI DEHNNET and POLETIKA MEMRIYA devastated our Military skill . There are completly wrong articles about, Massawa Battle field combat, which is I have seen that on Battle Field duty. We spent ourchildhood time in the former Eth. Navy serving for the unity and integrity of the beloved country. As the BBC witnessed once “The small navy but effective”. Sincerly served our people and also enjoy the true love we had to each other. I am proud of it. That dim memory nourshed me to live in hope and peace of mind.

Dear Abiye Belege, Commodore Belege was our Leader & Hero Father of all Ethiopian Navy members. When I remembering the former Ethiopian Navy Heros, I respect & honoured him in my rest of life, during Massawa Naval Base Battle field front line, I was with him behind the Naval Base main gate, smallarms firing against enemy. That was, after I and my coleagus stop firing the Heavy Gun Rocket launching(BM 21), Who was ordered by General Tilahun. One of the Ethiopian Navy member Marine Comando member told me that, Commodor Belege Belete was killed himself as Hero near the sea shore after heavy smallarms firing against Shabiya.

First of all the informations a real history-(from our respected friend (firde kebede (LT) , Biniam Yohannes (LT) and Yonnas LT and other Naval personnel work with him.
The event was happened after Massawa Naval Base was under Shabiya (the so called EPLF(shifta), temporally Nacura Island was as Naval base – During this time the life of a Naval personnel is disrupted-the so called Naval Intelligence, Naval security, Naval Political Officers are great headache for the Navy ingeneral.
- A no of sabotages are done in our Navy direct or indirect by a no of ground force Higher officials.
-the Moral factor of each personnel in our navy – lost the beloved ones, lost the heritage of our Naval base, the political situation etc
- Mainly the Brutal Derg regime.
-the above state machineries (politics, intelligence and security)great obstacle(headache) to achieve your goal towards your beloved country and Our Great (smart)Navy.
-There is one clear fact(common to all of us ) except those exclusive personnel- nobody likes the regime(red terrorist) as you mentioned earlier -many of our dear friends & collages are killed
- the government become worst and worst.
This is the time that Heroes are born to save people from such damn & misarable life by scarifying his own slife .
Who is Firde Kebede ?
Young Naval Office Learned first in Addis Abeba University (BUED faculity)dropped and Join Ethiopian Navy (learned in the former USSR ) Russian federation and graduated in electro navigation – naturally he is brave, dynamic, very kind and active mind (born in Addis with vey good family- if we remember once his family (his mother and sister are coming to Massawa to visit him (even there was ceremony made by Comodor Getachew Seyoum (let Allah’s peace & mercy upon him).welcoming his family.
After served his first assignment on Landing craft L-1037 as Deck officer-He is promoted to high position – no body have such chance for such young officer in his age(even in our naval history) – He become NNC(Northern Naval Comand) Navigating Officer= Flag Office in the Soviet Naval Organization.He is one of the 9 staff of NNC- together with Captain Tesfaye (Base commander),Captain Tsegaye(Big dady),cdr Mehari , cdr Abebe operation)and others (even smember of NNC assessment board).
Before the Incident ( capture of massawa- almost 7 days before as a chance he is assigned to Naval HQ Addis Ababa.
When he heard the information for the disaster of massawa -he asked the Head Quarter (Captain Leikun Berhanu-Naval personnel)to assign him on board ship – and worked on F-1616 as Navigation Officer.
Intentionally He can not work properly, specially his friends like Solomon Teklu(LT) who is dead by fragrance of Artillery Bomb Shabia dropped on board ship FSS 162
He has a long plan to desert (escape to neighboring country),
Let me remind you that time no body can’t talk & think about anything- a man is not trusting even his brother !! big ship crew !!how to organize in “unti-government movement” now the film started
This is a real no one cannot believe – a miracle – even by inviting soviet armed officers to get top secret information-by inviting Alcohol drinks.

7. What is a Reactions from ships at sea (deployed ships)-
8. What is the reaction from ELF (shabiya – massawa and the area almost under their control.
9. What is the reaction when understand the Eth, Navy Nakura Naval Base?
10. Every two hours the Navy has PIM(ships position indicating at sea) which will be transmited to NHQ Addis.
11. From 4-5 ships are deployed at sea any ships watching each other day and night(by Radar).
12. How can he escape from this , now his mind play a miracle role.
13. Until the last Hour no body even has no any idea (even suspection)about the mission.
14. 12 hr mission 1100ton big ship with a no of crew-by the way one man can collapse the mission if no advanced tactics.

I would like to mention about FMB-162 something about, Why was the 30mm Gun ceased Firing by itself & reprted to the actual CO, before I asigned to the Gunnery Workshop as 30mm Gun technician and None contact Torpedo Lab-oprator. I have explained to the CO & Excutive Officer repeatdly to change all the ammunition, as well as to the squadron commander CDR Tesfaye Abrha had not accept ed and careless about the Gun, The Ammunition have detorirated, the shell had been expanded not entering to the “Revolver chamber” and stop firing, so that, I was mentioned to them the enemy Boats could come strike in easly way to do any thing whatever. I heard everything, after the death of our beloved Brothers J/LT Solomon Teklu, L/S Solomon(Egro), When, 30mm Gun stop firng by itself. “Professional Gunners, Enginers, Electricians and others were hidden in Poletika Memiya and Wetaderawi dehnnet Offices”. mercato, The Book published by the Former Ethiopian Navy Association had written merly about the positive actions and history of the Red sea in ancient Ethiopia & now. We should introduct our weak points, the reality achivements to the next generation.

mercato/jaleta, there is no any diffrent changing your name being graduated from agarfa. all seamen recurit, who were graduated from Naval Technical Training center are better than you all agarfa fake Nav officers. 1. How is the Ethiopian Navy built on?
2. Is there Unity among Officers and inlisted?
3. What is there political attitude towards Ethiopia and Eritrean?
4. What is perspective of X – Naval forces?
